The Solar‑Thermal Mobile Seed Dryer Is A Compact Off‑grid Unit Combining A 1 M² Solar Concentrator

Description

The Solar‑Thermal Mobile Seed Dryer is a compact, off‑grid unit combining a 1 m² solar concentrator with paraffin wax phase‑change thermal storage to deliver controlled 24‑hour drying for small grains such as sorghum and millet. Designed to be portable, low cost, fuel free, and easy to operate, the system ensures superior seed quality by maintaining 50 to 60 °C drying that preserves germination and eliminates mold. Daytime solar charging heats PCM packs for 3 to 4 hours while drying a 5 cm layer of seed in a perforated tray, then the stored heat is released overnight to maintain 45 to 55 °C for 6 to 8 hours, enabling hands‑free round‑the‑clock drying. Typical drying rates are about 1 to 2 percent moisture loss per sun‑hour with throughput near 25 kilograms per cycle and final moisture targets of 10 to 12 percent. The package includes a foldable parabolic reflector or Fresnel lens and frame, insulated 50 liter chamber with UV stabilized polycarbonate lid, PCM pouches, perforated tray, thermometer, and a user manual. A one‑day field workshop covers assembly, safe operation, moisture testing, maintenance, and cooperative rental business models. Safety and maintenance guidance warns never to stare into or touch the concentrator focus, to use heat resistant gloves, to keep PCM pouches sealed and away from open flames, to inspect gaskets insulation and alignment before use, and to clean seeds and avoid overthick loading to prevent overdrying.
