The strangeness of the content of the manuscript discussed below makes it necessary to first devote a few words to its appearance. The outrageous report was written in a reddish color on a very coarse yellowish material that could have been paper, but just as well some kind of bast or canvas. Some pages bore curly, intertwined decorations in bright green, blue, and violet: animal masks, distorted human body parts, and grotesque faces, such as are characteristic of the primitive art of certain indigenous peoples. These depictions swirled around in an arabesque-like jumble, sometimes at the top, sometimes at the bottom of the text; sometimes the text was arranged around such an ornament in a way that was more bizarre than pleasing. The strange manuscript was bound in a rough sailcloth stretched over cardboard, on which, between the most artistic and colorful arabesques, large ornamental letters read: "Dr. Webelhorst's Confession."
